The Maple has Arrived!

Although the weather here in Upstate New York feels like we should be making maple syrup, we are more focussed on making the maple workbenches for the New Legacy School of Woodworking here in Greenwich. The material for the benches arrived from  Drumm’s Saw Mill and was stacked under the overhang in front of the shop. Before we bring it inside to acclimate we have to meet to finalize all details, dimensions and set up to cut and dimension the large sections of wood and prepare it for joinery, lamination and so on.

With fifteen benches to build this is going to require a coordinated effort to get the heavy work of machining accomplished efficiently, and it’s in this area of woodworking that we always strive to establish a real balance between handwork and machines. Most likely we will be starting with the bench tops, because the finished height of the tops determine several other key dimensions on the benches.

So there will be plenty to share in the coming weeks and once we start milling the stock, we will be sure to post pictures and document the progress.
