Summer Workshop 2012

A month-long workshop with Paul Sellers

16th July- 11th August*

Imagine the challenge of a month-long workshop with master craftsman and teacher Paul Sellers. This year we offer for the first time a 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) intensive, month-long course in response to requests for a continuous short woodworking and furniture making course. The projects you make are designed to ensure a well-defined foundation in the traditions of hand tool woodworking, which can then be readily adapted to machine methods also. New woodworkers with no prior experience who sign up for this course have the opportunity to spend three days preparation days before the course begins.  Throughout the four weeks we explore the many issues surrounding traditional and state-of-the-art hand tools, the methods for working them, working concepts in design, wood with all its idiosyncrasies, sharpening methods and techniques for different hand tools and much more.

Skills that are taught include:

  • Mastery of the bench plane
  • Sharpening hand planes, chisels, saws, spokeshaves and scrapers
  • Project planning and development
  • Concepts of design
  • Project layout
  • Hand cut joinery methods and techniques.
  • Wood preparation and planing foursquare by hand
  • Wood finishing techniques

With those skills each student builds his or her first:

  1.  Dovetailed tool chest,
  2. Craftsman-style rocking chair from hardwood
  3. A beautiful solid oak coffee table.

Price $2900 for the month. This includes all materials.
